Arsenic & Old Lace
October 7-9 & 14-16, 2011
Directed by Angie Liske, Assisted by Norbert Wenzl
The play is a farcical, dark comedy revolving around Mortimer Brewster, a drama critic who must deal with his crazy, homicidal family and local police in Brooklyn, New York, all while he debates whether to go through with a recent promise to marry the woman he loves. His family includes two spinster aunts who have taken to murdering lonely old men by poisoning them with a glass of home-made elderberry wine laced with arsenic, strychnine, and “just a pinch” of cyanide; a brother who believes he is Teddy Roosevelt and a murderous brother who has received plastic surgery. This comedy is to “die” for.

Adapted from the Barbara Robinson book of the same name, this hilarious and heartwarming tale follows the notorious Herdman children and their attempt to perform in their Sunday school’s Christmas play. Other church members aren’t excited about the casting decisions since the kids only recently began attending church for the snacks and are, to say the least, unfamiliar with the source material. Despite the controversy, the unruly Herdman children are exposed to the Christmas story for the first time and the audience is presented with their honest and “unique” interpretation of it.

All the hot gamblers are in town, and they’re depending on Nathan Detroit to set up this week’s incarnation of “The Oldest Established Permanent Floating Crap Game in New York.” The only problem is, he needs $1000 to get the place. Throw in Sarah Brown, who’s short on sinners at the mission she runs; Sky Masterson, who accepts Nathan’s $1000 bet that he can’t get Sarah Brown to go with him to Havana; Miss Adelaide, who wants Nathan to marry her; Police Lieutenant Brannigan, who always seems to appear at the wrong time; and the music/lyrics of Frank Loesser, and you’ve got quite a musical.
